From Chapter One - Barbara Helps Hatch the Phoenix

...Barbara and Joyce were startled to see a golden feathered bird erupt from the egg that had rolled into the fire pit - but then the bird began to speak! The duo stood for quite some time staring with their mouths agape and their eyes agog. Watching them, the bird shrugged its wings with an impatient air. "It is not polite to stare, you know. And please close your mouths. You look like fish!" Its voice was elegant but quite pompous in a know-it-all sort of way. "Who are you two?" Barbara was a little afraid to talk to the Phoenix, but it was so demanding she had to answer. "I'm Barbara and this is Joyce." "It is good to meet you, Barbara and Joyce. Now tell me, which of you put my egg into the fire? I must know." Immediately Joyce pointed at Barbara, which made Barbara start to worry. The bird seemed so humorless! "I see," said the bird. "Well, in that case..." Slowly it made a deep, formal bow to Barbara. It closed its eyes and quite ceremoniously and graciously said, "I am your grateful debtor." Barbara and Joyce still could not find words - everything had happened so fast, and it was all so surprising. The Phoenix never seemed to lack for words, however, and it continued. "Clearly my fame has lived for thousands of years. I can see that you are in such awe of me that you cannot speak."...
