...They pulled the Psammead out of the sand, pushed it into the orange canvas bag and quickly held up the amulet. “Take us near the Mediterranean Ocean,” said Logan. “Any time you like in the past, but somewhere where you are.” Then he nervously glanced at Victoria as he said the special words that would transport them back in time. “Ur Hekau Setcheh!”
Suddenly there was a rocking and swaying. The three adventurers were in a strange boat with high bulwarks pierced with holes for oars. There was a high seat with a muscular steersman guiding the boat with a long tiller. The bow of this mighty vessel was shaped like the head of serpent. The crew was busy and the commotion and action were so interesting that, at first, Logan and Victoria did not even wonder where the amulet had brought them. Luckily, the crew seemed too busy to notice the children.
“Oh no!” whispered the Psammead as it stretched an eye out to get a careful look. “This is a boat, and boats mean wet, and wet means misery. You know I cannot get wet; that’s why I live in sand! Goodness, I got a tear on me thousands of years ago, and it still hurts. No, no. This is bad! Take me back right away!” and it pulled back into the bag. Victoria put her wind-breaker over the bag in order to be particularly careful to keep the Psammead dry.
“What are you doing?” Logan suddenly asked the man that was giving orders and seemed to be the captain.
The captain jumped with surprise and stared at him, but he had seen too many strange lands to be too surprised at these strangely-dressed stowaways. He looked them up and down and finally said, “How did you get here?”
“Magic,” said Victoria carelessly. The captain fingered an amulet that hung around his neck.
“Where are we?” asked Logan.
“Tyre, of course,” said the captain. Then he moved off to shout commands to a group of rowdy sailors.
“We never asked to come to Tyre,” whispered Victoria.
“But the amulet is here, too. We asked to be taken where it was!” said Logan. “We ought to be able to find it in a ship like this.”
“Oh, dear, oh, dear,” they could hear the Psammead saying. “I shall never live through this adventure. They should not have brought me here!”
“Look!” cried Victoria, suddenly. On the bare chest of one of the sailors they could see a shining red ornament. It was the exact counterpart of their precious half-amulet.
“We’ve finally found it!” Logan said. “Take it, and let’s go home!”
“Easy to say; ‘take it’,” said Victoria. “He looks big - why don't you take it!”... |
